Unlike the majority of shooters - tactical or otherwise - Armed Assault doesn't cast you as a lone hero who can single-handedly win the war. Instead, you play as a soldier within a squad, who must work alongside AI teammates to outfight and outmanoeuvre the enemy on some of the largest and most freeform levels ever to grace a videogame.

Generally substandard presentation throughout, with a lot of poorly written dialogue.

The graphics engine is showing its age, though it still displays a decent amount of detail.

Minimalist yet realistic sound effects create a genuinely believable world, especially when coupled with the brutal sounds of war.

Gameplay 8.5
Superbly realistic, freeform and grandiose, with lashings of lifelike infantry and vehicle-based combat, but some poor interface decisions do let the side down.

Lasting Appeal 9.5
Armed Assault’s freeform nature and epic scope are virtually unrivalled both in single and multi-player. There’s months of replayability to be had here.
